U13 success at Eastern Counties Festival
By Kevin Ellis
Wymondham go unbeaten against some tough opposition.
Wymondham hosted the tier 1 Eastern Counties festival and welcomed, Holt, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge to Barnard Fields.
The weather was less than ideal, wind and sideways rain but the pitches were in great shape (well done Management and grounds committee)
The boys knew it would be a tough ask to get through the day undefeated as the level of opposition would be tough and a straight 15 minutes is never an easy situation to manage.
Game 1 vs Holt - Win 4-1
We start against our local rivals Holt and we catch them cold. The boys have been asked to give a fast start and they don't disappoint getting 2 early tries. We are able to add a couple more with some slick moves down the back line. Holt were restricted to very few chances but did manage to get a score towards the end of the match, but overall we were simply too strong and organised and we have the winning start we needed.

Game 2 vs Ipswich - Win 4-0
With barely any rest time between the first and second game, we are off again! Again we have asked the boys to start fast and keep their line speed going. They duly oblige and force Ipswich into some errors and with our forwards pressuring them we then move the ball through the hands and score some well worked tries. Ipswich never give up and we are forced to be the best we can be in attack and defence, and again the boys deliver, not giving an inch to the opposition. The scoreline is flattering to us, Ipswich has been a tough test but the boys are being ruthless.

Game 3 vs Bury St Edmunds - Win 1-0
Our third game back to back will be the toughest of the day! Having been defeated by Bury a couple of weeks ago on a makeshift smaller pitch we would have the chance to use the space and hopefully get the result. The game is a barn stormer with either side not wanting to give an inch. Both teams are giving 100% commitment in every physical element, tackling, rucking and counter rucking. The first ten minutes in played in the Bury half but we are restricted to only a couple of half chances. Then we get our chance a line break by Ethan gets him beyond the Bury back line but they bring him down short of the line...we secure the ruck and Tyler makes a break for the line, two Bury players try to stop him and nearly do but his stretch to the line secures the score! We have managed to get through the tough defence. We now have five minutes to keep a clean sheet. Bury hit back and we are pinned in our 22, we need to be strong, we are but we are being pinged for high tackles, hit them low boys! They do and somehow we keep them out and Bury cant breach our defence. We turnover the ball and send it into midfield, and Bury knock on. Scrum to Wymondham.....how long left....2 seconds!! Win the scrum, kick the ball out screams everyone from the sideline! But Bury win the scrum they are on the attack but the boys are resolute and we turn the ball over, Wilbur has it in his hands and he lashes it at it and somehow on the tenth bounce it scrapes the line! A win...the win of the day, what an effort by the boys, we are ecstatic but we still have one game left.

Game 4 vs Cambridge - win 5-0
Our final game and the boys are ready to go again. They have been exceptional and even though there are no titles or trophies handed out, they want to ensure they win all their games.
Once agin they start brightly and their line speed denies the opposition time and space and we are ahead with a brilliant well worked try into the corner. The work they are putting into their defence is paying off and the speed at which they break and get the ball through the hands is too much for Cambridge and we extend our lead. Henry Nanka-Bruce is having an exceptional game tackling and gaining yards and sets up another try.
We then make some changes to give others some game time, but unfortunately a Cambridge player is injured and the referee calls an early end to the game, a bit of an anti climax....but the lads have done it they have secured all four wins and outperformed some tough teams, what a great day well done all.
