By Matthew Hood
2nd XV continue to improve
Wymondham's 2nd XV were away vs Lowerstoft & Yarmouth's 1st XV this weekend and it was a must win game for Wymondham.
The game started off quickly with the Red and Black put under early pressure from the Blue and White of L&Y. The opposition took early advantage of a penalty in Wymondhams half with a following wind and put a kick through the posts to give them an early lead. L&Y 3 - 0 Wymondham.
Wymondham played well, battling hard and wining scrums, lineouts and turning over ball but couldn't make this hard work count conceding another penalty which L&Y once again slotted between the posts. L&Y 6 - 0 Wymondham. Dicipline remained a problem for Wymondham and they soon gave L&Y another chance to put themselves 9 ahead, fortunately for Wymondham the kick went wide.
Play continued with both teams still battling hard where Ciaran Long took a knock to the head in a ruck meaning Onisimo igakalele (Simmo) came on as a replacement. Using this moment of confusion, L&Y seized the opportunity and scored in the corner for their first try of the match putting them further ahead. L&Y 11 - 0 Wymondham (Unconverted).
Wymondham stepped up, knowing they were still in the game and they continued to win in the pack and at the breakdowns. a great set of play saw Simmo dance across the line for Wymondham's first points on the board duly converted by Darren Wilson. L&Y 11 - 7 Wymondham.
Unfortunately for Wymondham, just before half time, L&Y managed to break through Wymondham's defense and put another one away in the corner making the half time score L&Y 16 - 7 Wymondham
Wymondham didn't make any changes at half time and came back on determined to bring the game back under their control. The red and black shifted up a gear and started putting pressure on L&Y using the wind to pin them in their own 22. Some great work from the pack securing ball and sucking in the opposition defense gave the backs the space they needed to link some great play together and put Darren Wilson under the posts which he then converted. L&Y 16 - 14 Wymondham.
L&Y rallied after the reset and again managed to get round Wymondham's outside to score in the corner unconverted. L&Y 21 - 14 Wymondham. Wymondham then made some changes taking Matthew Hood out of the pack and bringing Dan Shepard on giving Freddie Calver a well earned rest. Nicholas Diamond Also came on for Jack Dring as a straight replacement at No.6
With the changes made, Wymondham restarted with renewed vigor. They continued to battle hard and forced L&Y to try new tactics. Wymondham adjusted well and forced a turnover in L&Y's 22 giving the chance to get the ball to Matthew O'Brien who put it over the line for his Debut try for the club again converted by Darren Wilson bringing the teams all square at Darren Wilson L&Y 21 - 21 Wymondham.
Using the momentum, Wymondham's 2nd XV kept the pressure in and held L&Y in their half eventually scoring a penalty which Darren Wilson converted to 3 points with a kick between the posts. L&Y 21 - 14 Wymondham
With only minutes to play L&Y gave everything they had and fought hard in Wymondham's 5m but the Red and Black defense held strong forcing them back. L&Y fought on and recieved a penalty which they attempted to take quickly but Tom Potkins slapped the ball out of the oppositions hand awarding him a Yellow card.
Last play of the match, L&Y ran hard at the line looking for the win but again, Wymondhams defense held strong and they forced a mistake from L&Y ending the game.
L&Y 21 - 24 Wymondham
